Reggae is foundation music. It beats like the earth. The sound of the wind, sea, air flowing free blowing breeze. There’s also a rhetoric to classic roots music, a logicality, its a bit like finding that magical mountain path that takes you to the mountain top for the first time.

So whenever some of these timeless selections are remixed I can be a little wary. How can any one for example improve the sound of ‘None of Jah Jah Children No Cry’ by Ras Michael and The Sons of Negus. I once had the pleasure of meeting Ras Michael backstage at Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in the USA. He came across like a humble lion and how can any one improve on the works of a humble lion!

And yet Geneva’s roots stalwarts Cultural Warrior’s Music have done precisely this to 8 classic roost reggae tunes along with their respective dubs mixed by CWM’s Lionpaw and the UK’s own Russ D, Gussie P and Vibronics.

Various Artists – Classic Reggae Recut Chapter 1 is a mighty release well worth seeking out. I did my own back to back mix, tune with dub into next tune with dub lasting over one delightful hour. Perfect for that drive to Paphos!
